FAQs
What exactly is ground coffee?
Ground coffee is roasted coffee beans that have been crushed or milled into smaller particles with a coffee grinder. Unlike instant coffee, the grounds do not dissolve in water; they must be brewed using a filter, French press or coffee maker so the water can extract the flavour. We have a selection of coffee makers that includes single-serve coffee makers, drip coffee makers, espresso machines and coffee percolators.
What’s the difference between ground coffee and instant coffee?
Instant coffee dissolves immediately in hot water because it is pre-brewed and dried, while ground coffee requires brewing and filtering to extract the liquid. Instant coffee does not need a coffee maker to be made, while ground coffee needs a drip coffee maker, French press, coffee percolator or espresso machine. Ground coffee tends to have a richer flavour than instant coffee because it preserves more natural oils.
Does ground coffee go bad?
Coffee grounds do not technically expire or go bad in a way that can make you sick. However, they can lose their flavour and go stale over time. Coffee grounds should be kept in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark and dry place like a cupboard. Air and moisture can affect the coffee’s taste, and if moisture gets into the container, it can lead to mould and bacteria.
How do you store ground coffee?
To properly store ground coffee, keep it in an airtight and opaque container in a cool, dark and dry location, like a kitchen pantry. Air can make coffee go stale quickly and if moisture gets inside, it could lead to mould and bacterial growth. Do not place ground coffee in a refrigerator because refrigeration can expose the coffee to moisture and odours from other foods.
