FAQs
What is instant coffee?
Instant coffee is a beverage that’s made from real, brewed coffee beans that have been dehydrated into powder, granules or liquid extract. This is done so it can quickly dissolve into hot water or milk. Instant coffee has less caffeine than regular home-brewed drip coffee and needs no brewing equipment, filters or cleanup. It’s a popular option for travelling, camping or anyone who wants a quick cup of coffee.
How do you make instant coffee?
To make instant coffee, you start by adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of instant coffee granules or powder to a coffee mug. Next, pour a bit of cold water onto the granules and stir. This helps prevent the hot water from burning the coffee. Then, pour hot water into the mug and stir until the granules completely dissolve and the colour is even. When that’s done, add cream, sugar or sweeteners to taste.
Does instant coffee have caffeine?
Yes, instant coffee contains caffeine. However, it generally has less caffeine than regular drip-brewed coffee. A normal brewed cup of coffee has around 95 mg of caffeine, while a cup of instant coffee has around 62 mg. This happens because you typically use less coffee powder to make instant coffee than you would when brewing filter coffee. You can also get decaffeinated instant coffee options if you prefer it. Does instant coffee go bad?
Instant coffee does not expire or spoil if it’s stored correctly. However, it can lose its flavour and go stale over time. Unopened jars or tins can last for a long time if they’re stored in a cool, dry place because their factory seal helps block out air and moisture. Opened jars should be used within a couple of months because air and moisture can affect the coffee’s taste and aroma.
