FAQs
What is disposable tableware?
Disposable tableware refers to single-use items that are designed to be thrown away after one meal or event. They are meant to eliminate the need for washing traditional dinnerware, drinking glasses, cutlery and flatware. Disposable plates and bowls are made from paper, foam or rigid plastic. Disposable cups are made from paper or plastic (often with a waterproof lining) for hot and cold drinks. Disposable cutlery, like single-use forks, knives and spoons, is typically made of plastic or wood.
Can you put disposable plates in the microwave?
Many types of disposable paper plates are safe to use in a microwave. However, it depends on their material, coating and design. Paper plates that are uncoated, plain white and unprinted are generally safe for quick reheating in a microwave. Look for plates that are labelled as microwave-safe on the packaging. Do not microwave plates with metallic accents, printed or decorative designs, or glossy or slick coatings. These types of plates can damage your microwave or transfer chemicals into your food.
Are disposable plates and cups compostable?
Not all disposable plates and cups can be placed in a compost bag or compost bin. It depends on the materials they are made of and whether they have a plastic or wax lining. Compostable materials for disposable plates and cups include plant-based fibres like sugarcane bagasse, bamboo or fallen palm leaves because they can break down quickly and naturally. They also include cups and plates labelled with plant-based linings like PLA (polylactic acid), certified compostable paper and plain, uncoated paper. If they’re made with plastic, foam or wax, they must be thrown out in a garbage can or garbage bag.
How can I maximize the use of disposable cutlery?
You can get the most out of your disposable cutlery by repurposing it for other practical tasks, sharing extras or storing them for future events. Disposable cutlery can work well as DIY tools, garden markers or arts and crafts tools for things like sculpting. They can also be placed in lunch bags for packed lunches or kept on hand for larger events and parties. If you have extra pieces of cutlery lying around, you can always share them with others.
