FAQs
How do you grind coffee beans?
To grind coffee beans, start by measuring your whole beans. Measure out the correct amount based on your brewing method and place them in a coffee grinder. Different grind sizes are meant for different brewing methods. A coarse grind is best for French presses and cold brewing because these methods involve a slower extraction in water. A medium grind is best used for standard drip coffee makers. A fine grind is best used for espresso machines.
How do you store coffee beans?
To store coffee beans and help keep them fresh, place them in an opaque, airtight container and store them in a cool, dark place like a pantry. Air can make coffee go stale and if moisture is introduced to the beans, it could lead to mould and bacterial growth. Do not place ground coffee in a refrigerator because refrigeration can expose the coffee to moisture as well as odours from other foods.
Can you grind coffee beans in a blender?
Yes, you can grind coffee beans in a blender. However, it is not ideal for getting the best flavour or an even texture from the beans. Blenders produce uneven particle sizes and the friction between the blades and the beans can generate heat and affect the flavour. If you do use a blender, use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of whole beans at a time. Do not run the blender continuously. Use only quick burst of about 3 to 5 seconds. In between bursts, shake or tap the blender to move any unground beans towards the blades.
What are the best coffee beans for espresso?
When shopping for coffee beans to make espresso, medium-dark to dark-roast Arabica beans or blends are popular choices for coffee lovers. Since an espresso machine uses a quick, high-pressure brewing method, these roasts can work well by balancing acidity and bringing out the rich flavours expected in espresso. You can also use medium and light roasts to make espresso but they are a less traditional choice.
