FAQs
What are disposable coffee cups made of?
Disposable coffee cups are typically made from paper that’s lined with a thin plastic or waterproof layer, or they’re molded from plastic foam. Paper coffee cups are made from paperboard (wood pulp) that’s formed into cups with single, double or triple walls for strength and heat insulation for drinks like coffee, tea or hot chocolate. They have a waterproof lining inside that is made with plastic, plant-based plastic, wax or water-based coatings to stop hot liquids from leaking through.
Can you microwave disposable coffee cups?
No, standard paper coffee cups should not be heated in a microwave unless they have a “microwave-safe” label or symbol. Disposable coffee cups with plastic or wax linings can melt or warp when heated in a microwave. This can release harmful chemicals into your coffee or weaken the fibres in the cup. You can only microwave a paper cup if it has a “microwave-safe” label on the packaging or on the bottom of the cup. These cups use heat-resistant linings and non-conductive glues and inks. If you want to heat a drink in a microwave, a good alternative is to use a coffee mug instead.
Are plastic cups recyclable?
Many rigid plastic cups are recyclable. Depending on local recycling guidelines, recyclable items can include disposable plastic cups, soda cans, food containers and cold-drink containers. Plastic cups that are made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate, #1) or PP (polypropylene, #5) are widely accepted in recycling bins and recycling bags when they’re clean and dry. Cups made from Styrofoam or red party cups are generally not recyclable along with cups that have leftover food, liquid or heavy grease.
Are lids available for disposable cups?
Yes, you can buy lids for disposable cups. They can come in different sizes, styles and materials. You can buy paper cup and lid combo packs or you can buy lids separately for your disposable cups. You can find disposable cup lids that are made from BPA-free plastics like PP or PET, fibre or compostable materials. Disposable cup lids can fit cup sizes like 10 oz, 12 oz and 16 oz.
