FAQs
What are coffee pods?
Coffee pods are single-serving containers that are filled with a pre-measured amount of ground coffee. They are designed to be used with compatible coffee makers like Keurig, Nespresso and Flavia by Lavazza. Coffee pods can come in different sizes and materials, so make sure you choose pods that match your coffee maker. Otherwise, they won’t work properly.
Do coffee pods expire?
Coffee pods do not expire or go bad in a way that can cause illness. However, their flavour can fade the longer they’re not used. Most coffee pods will have a “best by” or “best before” date rather than a strict expiry date. Manufacturers seal the coffee grounds inside aluminium or plastic to help it stay fresh for as long as possible. If a pod is cracked, punctured or crushed it should be thrown in a garbage bin immediately.
How do you use a Keurig coffee maker with pods?
To use a Keurig coffee maker, turn on the machine and fill the water reservoir with fresh water. When you’re ready to make your coffee, insert the K-Cup pod into the holder, lower the handle and place your coffee mug on the tray. Do not peel the foil lid off the pod. Select your brew size and press the brew button to begin. After your coffee is brewed, you can throw out or recycle the pod.
Are coffee pods recyclable?
Coffee pods can be recycled if they are empty and cleaned before they’re placed in a recycling bin. K-Cup pods are made from polypropylene #5 and can be recycled. You must peel off the foil lid and empty the used coffee grounds into your compost bin or green bin before recycling the pod. Nespresso capsules are made of aluminium and must be recycled through the Nespresso Canada Recycling Program. Make sure you check your local recycling guidelines to see if coffee pods are accepted in your region.
