FAQs
What is a webcam?
A webcam is a camera designed to capture and stream live video and audio to your computer or network. It’s composed of a lens, image sensor and a microphone. It is primarily used for video calls on programs like Zoom or Teams, or livestreaming and recording content. Webcams can be connected to a computer through a USB cable, wireless connectivity or are built into laptops like a MacBook, Windows laptop, Microsoft Copilot+ PC, Chromebook or gaming laptop. If you travel with your laptop a lot, keep it protected with a padded laptop bag.
How do I connect a webcam to my computer?
When setting up an external webcam on your computer, start by connecting it to your computer with the included USB cable. Place it on the top of your monitor with its built-in clip or place it on a flat surface. Next, install any necessary software that comes with the webcam. Finally, adjust the webcam’s settings in your video conferencing or streaming software to make sure it is using the correct device. Keep your camera lens clean with electronic cleaning products like cleaning wipes and compressed air dusters.
What can I use instead of a webcam?
Instead of using a webcam for your video calls and recordings, you can use your smartphone, tablet or digital camera as a high-quality alternative. There are apps that can connect your phone to your computer and USB cables can connect your camera. These methods can give you better video and image quality compared to the built-in cameras in laptops. Keep your devices charged by stocking up on long-lasting batteries.
How to test a webcam?
After you’ve installed your webcam, you can test it out by opening the built-in camera apps on your computer. You can use the Windows Camera app or Photo Booth in MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook Neo and iMac models. You can also open apps like Zoom or Teams to test your webcam. Go to Settings, then Video to see a live preview and test the audio. If you have any issues, make sure your operating system doesn’t block camera access, your cables are connected, and any software is updated.
