A router connects your home or office network to the Internet. It directs data traffic between your devices like smartphones, computers, TVs and the modem. It acts as a central hub for your Internet connection. It assigns local IP addresses to devices and ensures data packets are routed efficiently to the right destination, creating your own local network.

When choosing the best router to use at home, look for one that matches your Internet speed, home size, and the number of devices you want to use. Look for routers capable of Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 for modern performance. Ensure it can support your Internet service provider’s maximum speed and consider home mesh Wi-Fi systems for larger homes and workspaces. Other things to consider include dual or tri-band support and security features like WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3).

No, a router and a modem are not the same thing. A modem brings the Internet from your service provider into your home, while a router distributes your Internet connection to all your devices and manages the traffic. They both work in tandem so you can enjoy using your Windows laptops, Copilot+ PC laptops, Chromebooks, gaming laptops and MacBook models. If you have smart home devices, the right router and modem are important to connect your smart hubs, smart doorbells and smart thermostats.

Yes, you need a modem if you have a router. A router needs a modem to connect to the Internet. The modem brings the Internet from your service provider to your home or office, while the router takes it and distributes that connection to all your devices. Many modern setups use a gateway that can integrate a modem and router into one piece of hardware. With the right setup, you’ll be able to enjoy reliable Internet for your iPhone, iPad, Samsung phone or Android tablet.
