FAQs
What are Wi-Fi mesh systems?
Mesh Wi-Fi systems, also referred to as whole home Wi-Fi, are wireless networks that combine a router with one or more mesh satellite nodes that expand the Internet coverage of a single network. Connected devices are seamlessly connected to the router or the satellite with the strongest signal in the area. Mesh Wi-Fi systems are a great solution for large homes and businesses where a single router can’t provide enough coverage. They are a great choice if you want to install smart home devices like smart hubs, smart alarm systems, smart lighting and more.
What is the best Wi-Fi mesh system for home?
When you’re looking for the best Wi-Fi mesh system for your home, look for systems with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 compatibility and tri-band or quad-band technology for better Internet speed. Also, make sure the system you’re looking at has enough satellite nodes to cover your square footage. Other features to consider include easy app management, strong security (WPA3) and enough Ethernet ports for wired devices. If you want to upgrade your home Internet plan along with your Wi-Fi network, we have a variety of options you can upgrade to from Bell.
Can I connect a mesh Wi-Fi to an existing router?
Yes, you can connect a mesh Wi-Fi system to an existing router to help expand coverage and eliminate dead zones. The satellite nodes can connect with your existing router to enhance your Internet connection to all your devices. Start by plugging the primary mesh node into your router with an Ethernet cable. Then, in your mesh system's app, change the operation mode to Bridge Mode or Access Point (AP) Mode. This allows your router to manage your network and the mesh system to act as a wireless extender. Set your mesh network to use the same network name and password as your existing router. This ensures your devices automatically connect to the nearest node.
Where is the best place to put a Wi-Fi mesh system?
To get the best performance out of your Wi-Fi mesh system, place the main router in a central and open location to help the signals spread evenly around your home. For the satellite nodes, place them halfway between the router and the dead zones. Try to position them so that they are no more than two rooms apart to maintain a good connection. Avoid placing the satellite nodes in areas that can affect the signal. Don’t place them behind TVs, in cabinets or near any metal or electronics that can cause interference.
