FAQs
What type of container keeps food fresh the longest?
Vacuum-sealed food containers help keep food fresh the longest by keeping out oxygen. This slows down oxidation, mould growth and bacterial growth that can spoil food. Their airtight seal can also prevent freezer burn and stop odours from spreading inside the fridge. If you’re looking for other ways to store your food, we have lunch bags that can hold your lunch to school or work.
Which food storage containers should I avoid?
Avoid using food storage containers that are scratched, stained or have cloudy plastic. Old or worn-out plastic can trap bacteria and shed microplastics more easily, especially when exposed to heat, oils or acids. Avoid food storage containers that are made from harmful plastics. Look for containers that are phthalate-free and BPA-free. That way you don’t have to worry about your food and snacks being contaminated.
Are food storage containers microwave-safe?
Not all food storage containers are safe to use in a microwave. Containers that are made from glass or ceramic are the safest choice for microwave use because they don’t risk contaminating food with chemicals. Also, containers made from polypropylene plastic are typically microwave-safe if labelled so. Do not microwave metal containers or single-use plastic containers because they can damage your microwave or melt.
Are food storage containers freezer-safe?
Not all food storage containers are safe to use in a freezer. You must check the bottom or packaging label for a freezer symbol. You can also look for containers made from materials like polypropylene, HDPE, tempered or borosilicate glass or food-grade silicone. If you put a container with the wrong material in a freezer, it could crack, warp or shatter in freezing temperatures.
