FAQs
What is transfer paper?
Transfer paper is a special type of paper used to transfer images and text from one surface to another. Depending on the type of arts and crafts project, there are two main types of transfer paper: tracing paper for drawings and heat transfer paper that’s used for creating custom apparel like T-shirts and tote bags. Heat transfer paper holds ink from a printer so it can be bonded to fabric with heat.
How does transfer paper work?
Transfer paper acts like a printable sticker for your custom designs and logos. Once you’ve decided on the design you want to use, you print it onto a piece of transfer paper with a home printer. Then you apply heat and pressure to bond the printed design to the fibres of a piece of clothing or an item made of fabric. You can use a heat press or an iron to apply the heat evenly. You will also need parchment paper or a silicone/Teflon sheet to protect the design from direct heat.
Can I put transfer paper in any printer?
No, you can’t put transfer paper into any type of printer. You need to make sure the paper and the printer you’re using are compatible. If not, you can risk ruining your project and damaging your printer. If you have an inkjet printer, you need to use paper that’s labelled as inkjet transfer paper. If you have a laser printer, you need to use paper that’s labelled as laser transfer paper.
Will transfer paper wash off?
If you’re applying transfer paper to a t-shirt or a piece of fabric with an iron or heat press, it should not wash off. Heat transfer paper is designed to withstand washing in a washing machine. However, over time it can fade, crack or peel and should be cared for if you want it to last. When you press your design onto a t-shirt, allow the ink and adhesive to set for 24 hours before wearing or washing. When washing, use cold water and turn the shirt inside out. When drying, tumble dry on low or hang dry.
