FAQs

What are cardboard boxes used for?

Cardboard boxes are mainly used for shipping, moving and storing items like household goods and office supplies, along with retail and consumer packaging for businesses. Their lightweight and durable design makes them an affordable, reliable and customizable way for people to protect fragile, heavy and important items while in transit. With our Box Finder, you’ll be able to find exactly what type of shipping boxes you need for your items.

What is the Edge Crush Test?

The Edge Crush Test (ECT) is a quality control measurement for boxes that determines the stacking strength of corrugated cardboard. It measures how much weight the edges of a corrugated box can withstand before collapsing. This allows manufacturers to safely optimize box strength for shipping and storage. For example, if a Staples Corrugated Shipping Box - 12" L x 12" W x 12" H has an ECT 32 rating, it means its edges can withstand 32 pounds of pressure per inch before collapsing.

How often can cardboard boxes be reused?

Cardboard boxes can be reused 2 to 10 times for storage, packing and shipping, but it depends on their construction and how they’re used. Once a cardboard box is no longer structurally sound, the cardboard can start to break down. Always check the condition of a box before reusing it. Make sure there are no holes, tears, water damage or odours. If you want something that can be reused multiple times, consider using plastic storage containers and storage boxes.

What is the strongest cardboard box?

The strongest cardboard boxes for storing or moving personal items are heavy-duty single-wall corrugated boxes. Corrugated cardboard (also known as corrugated fiberboard) is made of three layers of heavy paper. There are two flat outer layers and a wavy inner layer in between. This structure makes the cardboard lightweight, but rigid enough to absorb shocks to help prevent it from being crushed. To add extra protection to your boxes and belongings, we have poly bags, shrink wrap and stretch wrap.

How many moving boxes should I buy?

The number of moving boxes you should buy depends on your home’s size and the types of items you’re moving. A rule of thumb to consider is 15 to 20 boxes per 100 square feet of living space. Think about the number of items in your home or workspace and how fragile or durable they are. It’s better to have extra boxes than to rely on your exact estimate so you don’t run out while you’re packing. We have moving kits that can help make the packing process easier for you.
