What is the difference between clay and modelling clay?
Modelling clay is a synthetic material that’s designed to be malleable for arts and crafts projects like sculpting, crafting and different hobbies. Modelling clay can range from reusable oil-based clays to oven-bake plastic clays. Natural clay comes from a combination of earth minerals and water. It is used traditionally for pottery and ceramics and hardens by being fired at high temperatures in a kiln.
Does modelling clay need to be baked?
Determining whether your modelling clay needs to be baked depends on the type of clay you’re using and what you want to do with the finished project. If you’re using non-hardening plasticine like Crayola modelling clay or Play-Doh, it can’t be baked because it’s designed to be soft and reusable. If you’re using polymer clays, they can be baked in an oven to harden. If you’re using air-dry clay like Crayola Air-Dry Clay, they harden naturally when left alone. Baking air-dry clay can lead to damage or cracking.
What are the different types of modelling clay?
There are four main types of modelling clay: oil-based clays (plasticine), polymer clay, air dry clay and ceramic clay. Oil-based clays/plasticines like Play-Doh, are a mixture of oils, waxes and pigments and are designed to never dry out and be reused. Polymer clays are vinyl-based and are designed to remain soft until they are baked in an oven. Air-dry clays are water-based clays that harden when they are left out at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours. Ceramic clays are a combination of earth minerals and water that require a high-temperature kiln to make them harden permanently.
Is modelling clay good for kids?
Yes, modelling clay is a great option for kids to play with, learn about art and develop skills. Modelling clay gives kids a hands-on tactile experience that helps develop things like fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and imagination. Experimenting with modelling clay also helps kids focus and gives them a medium where mistakes can be easily fixed.
