FAQs
What is a padlock?
A padlock is a portable and detachable lock with a U-shaped design. It can thread through links or latches to secure objects like doors, fences, cabinets, storage units, tool boxes and chests. A padlock has a lock body and an internal mechanism, like a pin tumbler or combination lock, that’s released by a key or a numbered code. Padlocks come in a variety of sizes to fit whatever you want to protect.
What type of padlock is most secure?
The most secure padlocks are typically shrouded locks or discus locks made of hardened steel. They are designed to minimize shackle exposure. The shackle is the U-shaped metal bar that secures the lock, and reduced exposure helps protect the lock from bolt cutters. Shrouded locks make it difficult for thieves to cut them open with tools compared to standard padlocks or other locks.
How do you reset a combination lock?
If you want to reset your combination lock, like a Master Lock, use the current or default combination to pull the shackle up and open the lock. Next, turn the shackle 90 degrees counterclockwise and push the shackle all the way down. While you’re holding the shackle down, turn it another 90 degrees in the same direction. Then you’ll be able to turn the number dials to your new combination. To complete the reset, pull the shackle up and turn it back to its original position.
What's better, a combination lock or a key lock?
Key locks can be harder to pick than standard combination locks because of their design and because they can only be opened with the correct key. With key locks, you don’t have to worry about remembering a number combination, but you need to ensure that you don’t lose the key. Combination locks have the benefit of convenience because you don’t need to carry a key. With a numbered combination, you can share it with multiple people for public areas without having to make extra keys. The downside is that the combination can be guessed by a thief or forgotten. Determining which one is better comes down to your preferences and circumstances.
