FAQs
What is checked luggage?
Checked luggage is any baggage that is handed over to airline staff at the check-in counter in the airport. Checked luggage is stored in the plane’s cargo hold during your trip instead of in the cabin. At the check-in counter it is tagged and weighed, then at the end of the flight it can be picked up at the baggage carousel. Checked luggage bags are typically larger than carry-on luggage and can be used to store items like souvenirs, iPads, MacBooks, and smartwatches. Keep track of your checked luggage during your trip by placing a luggage tracker like an AirTag or SmartTag. They can give you location of your bags on your smartphone or iPhone.
Can you put a laptop in checked luggage?
Yes, you can put your laptop in your checked luggage but it is generally discouraged due to the risk of damage and the potential fire hazard of the lithium-ion batteries if they’re damaged. If checked the laptop needs to be completely turned off before packing. If you want to bring your laptop with you on the plane, a laptop bag or business backpack keeps your electronics organized. Bring a pair earbuds to listen to music and movies, or a power bank to keep your laptop or smartphone charged.
What suitcase sizes are best for checked bags?
Our collection of checked luggage ranges in sizes from 24” to 31.5”. In general, medium size checked bags are between 24” and 26” and large checked bags are generally between 27” and 30”. The size that is the best depends on what your preferences are and how much you plan to pack or bring back from your trip. Make sure to compare your suitcase dimensions with your airline’s checked baggage size and weight limits. For family vacations with children, kids luggage with toys, puzzles, and colouring books can help keep them entertained during the flight.
What are the rules for checked luggage?
Each airline has their own rules when it comes to handling checked luggage. Typically checked luggage should not weigh more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and the total dimensions (length + width + height) must not add up to more than 157 total centimeters (62 inches). If your bags exceed the weight/size limits, you can expect to pay an extra fee. If you need free up space, you can consider either carry-on luggage or personal items like backpacks, crossbody bags or fanny packs to help lighten the load. Stay comfortable on your flight with a travel pillow that provides neck support and stay hydrated on your trip with a water bottle or travel mug.
