DIY Indoor Kids Racetrack

Racers start your engines…on your marks, get set…tape! Surprise your kids with an indoor racetrack. The best part about it is that you can fit this racetrack to any space.

What you need:

• Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Black Solid

• Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Blue Solid

• Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Pastel Blue

• Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Green Solid

• Scotch® Expressions Masking Tape, Red

• Scotch® Scissors

• Cutting Mat

• Cork Backed Ruler

Plan and prep.

Choose your colour scheme and your product. If you would like to replicate the design we have featured in this project, simply refer to list above. This tutorial will assume you’ve selected these items.

Backdrop creation. 

To create a city backdrop, use Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Black Solid and create a silhouette of buildings. Fill them in with windows, doors, and signage using Scotch® Expressions Washi Tapes Blue Solid and Pastel Blue and Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Red. On the floor directly in front, and centered on the cityscape you have created, begin taping the pit stop area of your racetrack. Using Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Pastel Blue, create parking spaces large enough for the cars your kids play with. Use a ruler to help keep the spaces equal.

Lanes

To create the center and passing lines on the track and between the track and the pit stops, use your cutting mat to trim 1” lengths of tape. Line them along the edge of the pit stop. You can use a ruler to keep them evenly spaced.

Now you are ready to outline your track. Using the Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Black continue along the same line you created for the edge of the pit stop. Instead of creating a rectangular track, you can angle the corners. Use your ruler to find a length that works for your track size and simply repeat that length at any angled corners to keep it consistent.

To create the finish and starting lines continue the track straight at two of the corners, using about a 5” width for the track. The finish line will head into a wall and the staring line will be at the opposite end of the track.

Using the 5” width for t rack, follow the same lines of the perimeter of the track to the inside.

Add green stripes using Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape, Green Solid to your starting line, and red stripes using Scotch Expressions Magic™ Tape, Red at the finish line.

To create a fancy finish line with a banner, simply create two posts on the wall at the end of the finish line using Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Red.

Use your cutting mat and utility knife to trim triangles to use for your banner out of Scotch® Expressions Washi Tapes, Blue Solid and Pastel Blue.

EXPERT TIP: Making the racetrack generously large allows for many toy cars to use the track.
