Microsoft Launches the Surface Laptop

A week ago, Microsoft launched the new Surface Laptop—the latest addition to its popular Surface tablet lineup. Although I’ve always loved the Surface line of tablets, I have to say that I’m pretty excited to see a full laptop join the family. In addition to offering a more traditional laptop experience, the Surface Laptop has a number of features that users will find appealing:
The Surface Laptop is a 13.5-inch laptop that comes in at just 2.76lbs and 0.57 inches. This makes it slim and ultra-portable. Despite its portability, the Surface tablet sports a sturdy aluminum lid and base that comes in four great colours: Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold.
A couple of my favourite design features on this beautiful device are the PixelSense touch display and fabric covered keyboard. This display is the thinnest LCD touch model in a laptop and it even supports the Surface Pen. Though a keyboard might not seem like the most noteworthy part of a laptop, this one is different. Each key on the Surface Laptop is wrapped in Alcantra fabric imported from Italy and laser cut to fit. In short, it feels pretty luxurious for a keyboard.
Another impressive design feature of the Surface Laptop is the fact that it doesn’t have speaker grilles. Instead speakers have been integrated beneath the keyboard, which means that sound comes up from beneath your fingertips.
When it comes to performance, the new Surface Laptop packs a mean punch with either the latest Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor. It also has solid-state storage, or SSD, of up to 512GB. Finally, it can be equipped with up to 16GB of RAM making it pretty powerful. As you can imagine, all this power can really heat things up so to keep things cool, Microsoft has integrate vapor chambers into the aluminum finish.
One of the most impressive features on this device is its battery life, coming in at 14.5 hours during video playback.
The Surface Laptop will hit the market with Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 10S. This operating system only accepts apps from the Windows Store, helping you protect your system from malware and viruses. Users who prefer a little more freedom can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free through 2017 and for just $49 after that.
The Surface Laptop will be available in Canada on June 15th.
