Change. Small changes over time make a big difference. The guiding principle behind all eco initiatives at Immaculate Heart of Mary School is “our students are the future stewards of our Earth”. Over the last seven years small changes have led to a school climate of environmental concern, responsibility and leadership.
Our students have demonstrated that they are leaders in environmental change through their involvement and commitment to green initiatives. The formation of the school Green Team in 2009 began a movement of real change. Since that time, our students have created recycled art; written eco-friendly promises; composted; recycled; up-cycled; cleaned up shorelines and neighbourhoods; directed and starred in videos promoting saving energy; cultivated vegetables and herbs; planted trees, shrubs and perennials; and led a ban on plastic water bottles.
Not only have our students been creating change in the classroom, but the physical landscape of our school has changed as well. An unused and abandoned area behind our school has been transformed into a natural stone outdoor classroom shaded by trees and surrounded by flowering plants and shrubs. Next to this, is our school’s eco-friendly greenhouse where all students take part in nurturing and harvesting vegetables and herbs. Our school’s goal is to be a leader in green learning and innovation.
Caring for our environment has become a way of life for students and staff at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. These students are the future stewards of our Earth and our planet is in good hands.
