CES 2017: An Intro

Viva Las Vegas! Over the next week there’s going to be a lot of talk about tech in the news both here in Canada and around the world. Why? Because the 50th annual Consumer Electronics Show is about to start in Las Vegas, Nevada. The best part is that Staples is going to be on-site to give you a first-hand look at some of the coolest new technology rolling out in 2017 and beyond.

The Consumer Electronics Show or CES has been an industry event for half a century. That’s a bit mind-boggling when you think about it: 50 years of technology shows have taken place across the US, with some incredible technologies being announced at its keynotes and from the show floor.

The show didn’t start out in Vegas, though. Originally, a side-show to a major music event, CES began in New York and eventually became a twice yearly event that bounced back and forth from New York to Chicago. That all changed in 1998 when the CES team needed a venue and a town with the space to host what the gargantuan show was becoming.
And huge it is. This is a show that saw the birth of the VCR, the CD Player, the Camcorder, the Xbox, and even 4K HDR TV. If you’ve got a slick piece of tech that you’re announcing (assuming you’re not Tim Cook) you’re probably announcing it at CES.

This year we’ve got over 3,800 exhibitors that will be displaying the tech they’re working on and releasing, with over 165,000 people coming from 155 countries around the world. The big categories that we can look forward to this year will include major innovations in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, some leaps forwards in PC gaming from both hardware integrators and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and some strides ahead in 4K HDR TV and home automation.

One category that continues to see innovation will be autonomous vehicles, but I’m not sure you’ll see those at Staples any time soon…or will you?

It’s an exciting time to be in the technology world, and Staples is the place to get the scoop on what’s going on. If you haven’t already check it out, it’s time to like Staples on Facebook, subscribe to our YouTube channel, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram. That’s where you’ll get the latest news as soon as it happens.

See you in Vegas!
