Transfer Content from an Android Device to a New iPhone or iPad

The recent launch of the new iPhone SE and iPad Pro 9.7” has a lot of people thinking about investing in a new iOS device. Last week, I provided instructions on how to transfer your data from an old iOS device to a new one. If you’re planning to make the jump to iOS from an Android device, follow these instructions to transfer your data to your new device.

Step 1: Download the app

To make the transition from Android to iOS easier, Apple released an app called Move to iOS last year. You can download the app on your Android device from Google Play.

Step 2: Prepare both devices

To prep your devices for the transfer, you’ll need to make sure that they’re both plugged into a power outlet and that your Android device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Step 3: Start setting up your iOS device

Start setting up your iOS device by swiping past the Hello screen and following the on-screen prompts until you reach the Apps and Data screen. On the Apps and Data screen, tap Move Data from Android.

If you already set up the iOS device and moved past the Apps and Data screen, you’ll need to reset the device to factory settings by opening Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings.

Step 4: Start the Move to iOS app

Start the Move to iOS app on your Android device and tap Continue. Read the terms and conditions and tap Agree to continue, followed by Next in the top right corner of the Find Your Code screen.

Step 5: Get your code

Back on your iOS device, tap Continue on the Move from Android screen. Next you’ll have to wait for a ten or six-digit code to appear.

Step 6: Enter the code

Enter the code you got from your iOS device on your Android device and wait for the Transfer Data Screen to appear.

Step 7: Select the content you’d like to transfer

Select the content you’d like to transfer your new iOS device on your Android device. Content you can transfer includes contacts, message history, photos, videos, browser bookmarks, mail accounts, and calendars. However, your apps won’t transfer which means you’ll need to download them again from the App Store.

Once the transfer starts, leave your devices alone until the progress bar on your iOS device reaches completion. Depending on how much content you’re transferring, the process can take some time so you’ll need to exercise some patience.

Step 8: Finish setting up your iOS device

Once the progress bar on your iOS device reaches completion, tap done on your Android device and Continue on your iOS device. Follow the on-screen prompts on your iOS device to finish setting it up.

Step 9: Double check the transferred data

Check that all the data you selected transferred to your new iOS device. If anything’s missing, you’ll need to transfer it manually. Remember that apps won’t transfer so you’ll need to take some time to find them in the App Store and download them.

Now that you’ve transferred your data and set up your new iOS device, it’s ready to use! If you’re planning to sell or give away your old Android device make sure you restore it to factory settings to ensure that your data isn’t accessible by anyone else.
