Enjoy Winter this Season with these Outdoor Activities

When the air is chilly and the landscape is covered in a blanket of white, it's time to go out and have fun. There are many outdoor activities that you can enjoy in the winter without going too far. All you need is to make sure you have the right gear and then find the right location, such as a snow-covered hill with a good, gentle slope and few obstructions.

Here are 5 popular outdoor activities you can enjoy this winter season:

Skiing:

One of the most popular winter sports, skiing is also the most thrilling. Once you get the hang of it, you will want to ski every time you get a chance. If you are the intrepid type, you can go downhill skiing on a steep mountain slope. But cross-country skiing can be just as thrilling for most people. If you are new to the sport, you will have to learn from a good instructor. You would also be wise to invest in quality skiing gear, including a sturdy helmet.

Snowboarding:

Just imagine what it would feel like to descend a steep snow-covered slope standing on a snowboard with nothing to hold onto. Snowboarding is one of the most thrilling winter sports and you should definitely try it if you are a thrill seeker. But you will need some practice before you can go snowboarding down a mountain slope. To be on the safe side, make sure that you have a good quality snowboard.

Ice Skating:

Ice skating can be tricky for beginners; but once you learn to balance yourself on the slippery surface, before you know it you’ll be doing complicated tricks. As you gain more experience, you can try speed skating, figure skating, ice dancing and ice hockey. You can skate  in an indoor or outdoor ice rink. Make sure that you have a pair of good quality skates as well as a helmet to protect yourself from injuries.

Sledding:

If there is a hill with a gentle slope near your home, then you should go sledding. You can use a tube, saucer or a proper toboggan. Other than these, you do not need any special gear. However, you should bundle up in thick layers of warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold as well as to cushion yourself when you fall. Since two or more people can sit in the same vehicle, it will be fun as a group activity, especially with children.

Ice Fishing:

If you love fishing in summer, then you will also love fishing in winter when the rivers and lakes are frozen solid. Along with the usual fishing gear, you will need an ice saw to cut a hole in the layer of ice and a heater to keep the hole from freezing. When choosing a spot, make sure that the ice is at least 4 inches thick and that the temperature has remained below the freezing point for several days.
